BOOK REVIEW ~ ASKING FOR IT BY LILAH PACE

“This is who I am. This is what I want. Now I need a man dangerous enough to give it to me.”

Graduate student Vivienne Charles is afraid of her own desires—ashamed to admit that she fantasizes about being taken by force, by a man who will claim her completely and without mercy. When the magnetic, mysterious Jonah Marks learns her secret, he makes an offer that stuns her: they will remain near-strangers to each other, and meet in secret so that he can fulfill her fantasy.

Their arrangement is twisted. The sex is incredible. And—despite their attempts to stay apart—soon their emotions are bound together as tightly as the rope around Vivienne’s wrists. But the secrets in their pasts threaten to turn their affair even darker…

Reader Advisory: Asking for It deals explicitly with fantasies of non-consensual sex. Readers sensitive to portrayals of non-consensual sex should be advised.

Protect your family. At all costs.

It’d take the impossible to hurt Connor Cobalt, even for a moment.

Protect your family. At all costs.

At twenty-six, his narcissistic tendencies have made room for the people he loves.

Protect your family. At all costs.

And he loves Rose. But when his love is threatened, when his greatest dreams with her are compromised — what is the cost then?

Protect your family. At all costs.

    Love will guide his choices.
For the first time in his life.

While investigating border violence in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Denver journalist Natalie Benoit is caught in a bloody ambush and taken captive. Alone in the hands of ruthless killers, she will need every ounce of courage she possesses to survive.

Betrayed by another operative, Deputy U.S. Marshal Zach McBride has endured a week of torture and interrogation at the hands of a bloodthirsty Mexican drug cartel. Ready to give his life if he must, he remains unbroken—until he hears the cries of an American woman.

Although Natalie is only a voice in the darkness of their shared prison, her plight brings renewed strength to Zach’s battered body. With her help, he overpowers their captors, and they flee through the desert toward the border, the attraction between them flaring hotter than the Sonoran sun.

But past loss and tragedy leave both of them reluctant to follow their hearts, even when the passion between them reaches its breaking point. Faced with feelings neither expected, they fight to stay ahead of the danger that hunts them as forces more powerful than they can imagine conspire to destroy them both…

NEW COVERS FOR THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS SERIES AND INFERNAL DEVICES TRILOGY BY CASSANDRA CLARE!!!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ll know that I’m a HUGE fan of Cassandra Clare. Every single book I’ve read from her goes straight to my favorites list and leaves me with a book hangover for weeks. A while back it was announced that a brand new TV show based off her Mortal Instruments series will be airing on ABC Family and to celebrate, both that series and the Infernal Devices trilogy have revamped covers!!  It’s the same content as the current books with the only difference being these books will have extras related to the TV show. Without further ado, here are the covers for the Mortal Instruments series:

While I didn’t intend for this post to turn into a huge series recommendation I’m going to throw out recommendations for them anyways, just because I loved them SO much (both are 6 star series for me!) If you haven’t read either yet, STOP whatever you’re reading and jump into these books ASAP! These are all YA paranormal/urban fantasy reads filled with EPIC romance, action-packed suspense, and brilliant writing. They’re completely unputdownable and I had to remind myself to eat, sleep, and you know, return to reality while reading

    MAY FOLLOWER APPRECIATION GIVEAWAY

It’s that time of the month again!! I host a follower appreciation giveaway at the end of each month as an extra thank you to every Book Vigilante Reviews follower for your support. Every comment, like, share, email, book recommendation, etc… I all love and appreciate and it’s just so great to be able to chat with like-minded readers about books!  So for this giveaway, one winner will receive a paperback of their choice from the list provided.

How do I decide what goes on the list? It is a compilation of all the books I’ve read, reviewed, and blogged about each month – it doesn’t matter if I loved the book or disliked the book. The only ones not listed are the few books I may have started and then not finished.

**Note: Some book titles do not have paperback options available. In the event you choose that book, I will gift you an ebook copy instead. If a book hasn’t been released yet, paperback or ebook copy will be delivered on release date.**

When I first met him I resisted.
Like any forbidden love, I told myself he was a crush, and it would pass.
That was a lie. It never faded.

And I never expected he would fall for me just as hard.

There were so many reasons that should have kept us apart, least of all, the decade that separated us. Growing up in New York City, I learned early on that love is a double-edged sword. Love broke up my parents, love took away my friends, and love — the big, intense, never-been-like-this-before love — landed me in therapy. Now I’m heading to college, and it’s time to give love a clean slate again. But, can I really start over when he’s still in my life Because the one man I’ve always wanted, is also the only guy I absolutely can’t have…And he wants me just as fiercely.

Can I settle for anything less than the love of my life?

In love we find out who we want to be.
In war we find out who we are.

    FRANCE, 1939

In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France…but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When France is overrun, Vianne is forced to take an enemy into her house, and suddenly her every move is watched; her life and her child’s life is at constant risk. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates around her, she must make one terrible choice after another.

Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets the compelling and mysterious Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can…completely. When he betrays her, Isabelle races headlong into danger and joins the Resistance, never looking back or giving a thought to the real–and deadly–consequences.

With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah takes her talented pen to the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France–a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

BOOK REVIEW ~ 99 DAYS BY KATIE COTUGNO

Day 1: Julia Donnelly eggs my house my first night back in Star Lake, and that’s how I know everyone still remembers everything—how I destroyed my relationship with Patrick the night everything happened with his brother, Gabe. How I wrecked their whole family. Now I’m serving out my summer like a jail sentence: Just ninety-nine days till I can leave for college, and be done.

Day 4: A nasty note on my windshield makes it clear Julia isn’t finished. I’m expecting a fight when someone taps me on the shoulder, but it’s just Gabe, home from college and actually happy to see me. “For what it’s worth, Molly Barlow, he says, “I’m really glad you’re back.

Day 12: Gabe got me to come to this party, and I’m actually having fun. I think he’s about to kiss me—and that’s when I see Patrick. My Patrick, who’s supposed to be clear across the country. My Patrick, who’s never going to forgive me.

BOOK REVIEW ~ CHASING RIVER BY K.A. TUCKER

Armed with two years’ worth of savings and the need to experience life outside the bubble of her Oregon small town, twenty-five-year old Amber Welles is prepared for anything. Except dying in Dublin. Had it not been for the bravery of a stranger, she might have. But he takes off before she has the chance to offer her gratitude.

Twenty-four-year-old River Delaney is rattled. No one was supposed to get hurt. But then that American tourist showed up. He couldn’t let her die, but he also couldn’t risk being identified at the scene—so, he ran. Back to his everyday life of running his family’s pub. Only, everyday life is getting more and more complicated, thanks to his brother, Aengus, and his criminal associations. When the American girl tracks River down, he quickly realizes how much he likes her, how wrong she is for him. And how dangerous it is to have her around. Chasing her off would be the smart move.

Maybe it’s because he saved her life, or maybe it’s because he’s completely different from everything she’s left behind, but Amber finds herself chasing after River Delaney. Amber isn’t the kind of girl to chase after anyone.

And River isn’t the kind of guy she’d want to catch.

Hey everyone! It’s not often a make a blog post just for one sale, but for a book (and series) that I adored to pieces I totally will  If you haven’t read the Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare yet, NOW’S your chance as book 1 Clockwork Angel got a $7 price drop and is now on sale for $2.99!!! This is a completed series and be prepared to embark on an EPIC tale of fantasy, adventure, and the most heartbreakingly beautiful romance story EVER. It’s a 6 star trilogy for me! Pleeeeease trust me on this one and get this book (and series)!

In this modern retelling of “Hansel and Gretel,? 13-year-old foster children, Holden and Griselda, escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety but the other is left behind.

Ten years later, Griselda’s boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match where her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring.

Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage and a cache of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the whitewater of the Shenandoah.

Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people – once profoundly broken – who discover that love is the onlything that can make them whole again.

BLOG TOUR ~ LAST FIRST KISS BY LIA RILEY

A kiss is only the beginning…

Pinterest Perfect. Or so Annie Carson’s life appears on her popular blog. Reality is… messier. Especially when it lands her back in one-cow town, Brightwater, California, and back in the path of the gorgeous six-foot-four reason she left. Sawyer Kane may fill out those wranglers, but she won’t be distracted from her task. Annie just needs the summer to spruce up and sell her family’s farm so she and her young son can start a new life in the big city. Simple, easy, perfect.

Sawyer has always regretted letting the first girl he loved slip away. He won’t make the same mistake twice, but can he convince beautiful, wary Annie to trust her heart again when she’s been given every reason not to? And as a single kiss turns to so much more, can Annie give up her idea of perfect for a forever that’s blissfully real.

There are many rules a priest can’t break.
A priest cannot marry. A priest cannot abandon his flock. A priest cannot forsake his God.

I’ve always been good at following rules.
    Until she came.
My name is Tyler Anselm Bell. I’m twenty-nine years old. Six months ago, I broke my vow of celibacy on the altar of my own church, and God help me, I would do it again.
I am a priest and this is my confession.

The only sure way to destroy a man is to take what he cannot live without.

Three years ago, I had everything.

    A beautiful wife.
    A son.
    A reason for living.

Until a ruthless task force, assembled under Mayor Michael Culling, with a brutal strategy to make the streets of Detroit ‘safe’, ripped away everything I loved in a deadly hunt called The Culling.

They tried to kill me, too. I wish they had. Now I’m cursed by the memories of that night, and the words I whispered to my dying wife.

A promise—to avenge the wrong and set it right.

I’m no longer Nick Ryder. I’m a masked vigilante. Faceless. Loveless. Fearless. A man with nothing left to lose—one who’s seen the dark and violent truth behind the city’s flawless veneer.

Michael Culling doesn’t know who I am. Or what I want. All he knows is that I’ve kidnapped hisbeautiful wife.

An eye for an eye—isn’t that how the saying goes? And Aubree Culling is the perfect pawn to destroy him.

If she doesn’t destroy me first.

BLOG TOUR ~ MISS MATCH BY LAURELIN MCGEE

Hey everyone! Today I have an excerpt + giveaway for the recently released Miss Match co-authored by Laurelin Paige and Kayti McGee – “Welcome to the sexy, crazy, wildly unpredictable world of modern matchmaking, where fixing up strangers is part of the job–but falling in love is an occupational hazard…”

Just scroll down for the excerpt and then the giveaway for a finished copy of Miss Match!

    ::EXCERPT::

They caught the elevator just as it was about to go up. It was crowded, and in order to get everyone in, Andy had to press closer to her boss than she would have liked. Or maybe it was exactly as close as she liked. The shudder that ran through her at the touch of his body pressed against her back seemed to suggest as much.

He leaned into her ear. “Are you okay?”

His breath skated across her neck, sending yet another chill down her spine. Unwilling memories of the night at the bar invaded her mind—the taste of his lips, his body melding into hers, the unmistakable bulge pressed against her hip. A third shiver rolled through her limbs.

    Dammit.

“I’m fine,” she snapped before he could ask again. “Cold. It’s cold. I’m cold.” Yeah, he’d buy that. It was only seventy-five degrees outside and the air-conditioning hadn’t been turned on, at least not in the elevator. She gestured to the skirt that now seemed obscenely short under his gaze.

“Maybe I should warm you up.”

Did he really just say that? And if he did, did he mean it the way it sounded? She pivoted toward him. “What was that?”

He cleared his throat, something he seemed to do frequently. “I said that maybe some tea would warm you up. Or coffee, if you’re not a tea drinker. We have both in the employee lounge. My secretary could get some for you, if you like.”

She raised her near-empty coffee. “I have some already. Thanks.” Then she turned away from him, hoping he hadn’t noticed her flush. Of course he hadn’t said what she’d thought. She was ridiculous for thinking that he had.

Andy spent the rest of the ride admonishing herself. She really had to get a grip if this job was going to work out. First of all, she didn’t even like the man. Her body simply kept reacting to an unfortunate encounter they’d had nearly thirty-six hours ago. It was physiological, that was all. It meant nothing. Second, she was supposed to be finding a match for Blake Donovan, not daydreaming about being his match. Third, why did he smell so damn good anyway? It just wasn’t natural.

BOOK NEWS!! INCLUDING A NEW FAVORITE BOOK + EXCITING SALES & PREORDERS!!

Hey everyone!! It’s been a while since I last did a newsletter so bear with me but I just have some really exciting book news to share I immediately wanted to make a post about it. Basically I have three main things that I’m going to blabber about:

    • My new favorite book (a 5 STAR READ GUYS!!! I honestly can’t remember the last time I gave a book 5 stars)
    • A couple of really rare & noteworthy sales of books I loved in the past
    • A couple of exciting preorders coming up in the next week that I’m excited for YOU to read (‘cuz I’ve read them already and I think y’all will really enjoy them!)

First things first – the book that I fell in love with and didn’t want to end. It’s the newly released THE BLACK WOLF by J.A. Redmerski and an absolutely phenomenal read!!  It’s the 5th book from the In the Company of Killers series and is an expertly crafted romantic suspense read that was just as nail-biting and thrilling as the other books!! I seriously haven’t felt this kind of a book high for a long time and urge all of y’all to give this series a try, especially if you’re in a book slump and need a story to just grab your attention from the start. Since you have to read this series in order, I have all of the books listed below:

I’ll have my review of THE BLACK WOLF up sometime this weekend but really, I’d just recommend diving straight into the book if you’ve been following this series from the beginning OR begin with book 1 now. Trust me, these books are like crack – so addicting

There’s also a couple of book sales that can’t be ignored. Some have literally never gone on sale before and some are old favorites so if you’re looking for something to read this weekend, check these out!

Thin Love by Eden Butler – I LOVED this book so much!!! Love sports romances? Love NA romances in general? Love delicious angst that’ll hit you right in the gut? Definitely pick this one up! It’ll be $1.99 for the next 3 days only

The Vincent Boys (#1) and The Vincent Brothers (#2) by Abbi Glines – these books were two of the very first YA ‘Young Adult’ romances I read and loved! There’s something about Abbi’s writing that’s so simplistic yet so compelling and it shows, especially in her earlier works. Both of these are on sale for $1.99 each for the rest of the month. You gotta meet Sawyer and Beau Vincent

The King’s Curse by Philippa Gregory – if you’re a fan of historical fiction + romance I HIGHLY recommend this book and basically all of Philippa’s books. She’s a master at historical retellings, especially when it comes to Henry VIII’s reign in Tudor England. This one’s also on sale for $1.99 for the rest of the month.

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven – okay, so I actually haven’t read this book yet BUT you know how sometimes you read a book blurb and you can just tell that it’ll be a good one? No…that it’ll be a book that completely destroys you? That’s what this book’s blurb did to me. I just had to 1-click. “Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him. Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death. When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom…It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.”

And finally, some super exciting preorders coming up in the next week I’m just dying to get my hands on and some I can’t wait for y’all to read  First up is RUIN & RULE by Pepper Winters!! I was actually a beta reader (basically someone who read a very rough copy of the book and provides critical feedback to the author) for Pepper and my very honest opinion is that this is her best work to date (I gave it 5 stars when I first read it in October 2014). It’s definitely not as dark as her Monsters in the Dark series but there’s more heartbreak, more angst, more turmoil, just…more. I’m equally excited and nervous for everyone to read it because in a way, the book feels like my baby too LOL!  I really think longtime fans of Pepper’s will find it to be another winner and it’s also a great introductory book to read if you’re new to her work.

Another book that I read early and really enjoyed was RICOCHET by Keri Lake! This was my most favorite book I read in June and a dark romantic suspense story that left me breathless. Literally. It’s gritty and the author doesn’t sugarcoat anything, plus there’ll be so many revelations throughout the book that’ll just blow your mind! I mean, just check out the synopsis! How can you not be interested? “Three years ago, I had everything. A beautiful wife. A son. A reason for living. Now I know next week is going to be a BIG release week with big name authors like Katy Evans, KA Tucker, Kristen Proby, Jessica Sorensen, etc… releasing books and while I’m looking forward to checking out their books, there’s one book that’s got me super psyched and it’s called A MILLION MILES AWAY by Lara Avery. The moment I read the blurb I was a goner – it sounds like the perfect mix of emotion and romance I love in my stories  The heroine’s identical twin sister dies in a car crash and the only person who doesn’t know the news is her sister’s boyfriend who was deployed to Afghanistan. “…when she finally connects with [him] online, he thinks that [she] is [her sister] and says that seeing her is the one thing keeping him alive. Caught up in the moment, [the heroine] can’t bear to break his heart with the truth, so she lets [him] believe that she is [her sister]…soon she can’t deny that she’s falling, hard, for the one boy she shouldn’t want.” <– Yikes! So yes, this is the one I have my eye on

That’s pretty much it! The next blog post going live will be my 5 star review for THE BLACK WOLF by JA Redmerski so keep an eye out for that. Have a great Fourth of July weekend everyone!

BOOK REVIEW ~ THE BLACK WOLF BY J.A. REDMERSKI

Since devastating secrets were uncovered by Nora Kessler, Niklas Fleischer and Victor Faust have been divided as business partners and brothers. But ultimately Niklas is persuaded to lead a mission to Italy, and he sees it as an opportunity to set in motion forgiveness—or retribution—for his brother’s betrayal.

The mission: play the role of a wealthy German investor and kidnap a beautiful, notorious madam named Francesca Moretti. No stranger to these types of roles, Niklas is the best man for the job, but this time the risks will be much greater as he will not be doing it alone. Izabel Seyfried, still fresh out of a life of imprisonment and sex slavery, could be negatively affected by the things she will see in Moretti’s mansion, and Niklas must keep her in line so she does not blow their cover and get them killed.

But Niklas isn’t the only one who must play a role—Nora takes on the humiliating task of playing Niklas’s slave, and Izabel must play the role of his lover.

On one hand, Niklas couldn’t be enjoying himself more. On the other hand, the emotions that continue to rage inside of him may be too much for him to control, and it may be Niklas—not Izabel—who needs to be kept in line. He cannot forget what Victor has done, and this mission may just be the beginning of his downward spiral.

Can the blood bond that Niklas and Victor share as brothers be stronger than resentment? Or will vengeance dig the blade so deep that their bond be eternally severed?

BLOG TOUR ~ RICOCHET BY KERI LAKE

I had always been the invisible art student in high school.
    Passed by. Glossed over. Unnoticed.
Now I was Aria Watson…that girl.

After one bad decision, and being labeled a slut, I was no longer unseen. I was the whore. The ignoramus. The tramp.
I would never be invisible again.

Particularly to Levi Myers. He was the odd boy with the beautiful soul who accepted and understood the broken girl inside me.

Falling in love wasn’t the plan. But how could I resist his promises of hope? Of forgiveness? Of a future I had stopped dreaming of?
We were shattered. We were scarred. We were something strange and beautiful.

We were two lost souls holding on to the only thing that could keep us together.

    Each other.

Phoebe St. Claire has devoted herself to saving her family’s hotel empire—but her best efforts have not been good enough. With her whole world in turmoil, the tenacious go-getter turns to the once love of her life. Far from innocent, Jeremy McQueen was a guy from the wrong side of the tracks and her parents would never have approved. Their years apart have only made the sexy bad boy more irresistible than ever—and their reunion is explosive.

When she asks Jeremy to help her salvage her family business, he agrees immediately, with only one condition—he wants her in his bed.

But soon surprising circumstances leave Phoebe reeling. Was this fairy tale romance just too good to be true? Will Jeremy’s secrets pull them apart all over again?

BOOK REVIEW ~ OUT OF TIME BY BETH FLYNN

They thought with his execution it would all be over.
    They were wrong.

The leader of one of South Florida’s most notorious and brutal motorcycle gangs has been put to death by lethal injection. Days later, his family and friends should have been picking up the pieces, moving on. Instead, they’ve been catapulted into a world so twisted and dangerous even the most ruthless among them would be stunned to discover the tangled web of deception, not only on the dangerous streets of South Florida but all the way to the top.

In this gripping follow-up novel to Nine Minutes, Out of Time takes readers from the sun-drenched flatlands of 1950s Central Florida to the vivid tropical heat of Fort Lauderdale to the halls of Florida’s Death Row as we finally learn the gritty backstory of Jason “Grizz” Talbot, the terrifying leader of Satan’s Army motorcycle gang, and the secret he spent his life trying to conceal.

Not even Grizz’s inner circle knows his full story—the tragedy that enveloped his early life, the surprise discovery that made him the government’s most wanted and most feared, and the depths of his love for Ginny, the tenderhearted innocent he’d once abducted and later made his wife.

Once Grizz’s obsession and now the mother of his child, Ginny has spent years grieving the man she’d first resisted and then came to love. Now remarried to Tommy, a former member of the gang, the pair have spent more than a decade trying desperately to live a normal existence far from the violent, crime-ridden world they’d once carved out on the edge of the Florida Everglades. For Tommy, especially, the stakes are high. Desperately in love with Ginny for years, he’s finally living his dream: married to the woman he never thought he could have. But even with the façade of normalcy—thriving careers, two beautiful children, and a genuinely happy and loving marriage—they can’t seem to put the past behind them. Every time they turn around, another secret is revealed, unraveling the very bonds that hold them together.

And with Grizz finally put to death, now Ginny has learned secrets so dark, so evil she’s not even sure she can go on.

Will these secrets tear their love to pieces? And how far will Grizz go to protect what he still considers his, even from beyond the grave?

BOOK REVIEW ~ THORNS OF ROSEWOOD BY G.M. BARLEAN

Gloria Larsen knows only three things about her birth mother: she was over forty, she lived in Rosewood, Nebraska, and she was accused of murder in 1974.
When Gloria is offered a job as newspaper editor in the small town, she jumps at the opportunity to discover the identity of her birth mother. Digging into the past, she finds a story of the disappearance of a judge’s wife and four friends accused of murder. Gloria tracks the now-elderly women to an assisted-living facility. This is Gloria’s chance to write the story of a lifetime and finally know her heritage. Even if she can’t learn the truth of her origins, she must find out what really happened to Naomi Waterman Talbot.

Every once in a while I do like to mix things up a bit and take a break from romance, and this mystery read piqued my interest with the very first line – Gloria Larsen knows only three things about her birth mother: she was over forty, she lived in Rosewood, Nebraska, and she was accused of murder in 1974. And since I can never pass up a good mystery, I had to read this one.
Overall, I liked this book…and I didn’t. Basically the female lead Gloria is an editor looking for solid material to write a smashing blockbuster and when she hears about four women – dubbed the ‘Thorns of Rosewood’ – who were accused of murdering a judge’s wife but then let go, she’s determined to get the full story. She does have an ulterior motive too – her foster parents also reveal to her that one of those women was her mother.
I didn’t really like or dislike Gloria. Her character alone wasn’t what kept my eyes glued to the pages – I just wanted to know the whole story and relationship dynamic between the four women and the judge’s wife. In regards to that mystery, I was let down, but not because it wasn’t gripping. If anything, the need to find out what happened drove me to flip the pages, but I really had to suspend disbelief in order to somewhat enjoy the story. I especially found it hard to believe that these women who were in their forties were more naïve than I am in my 20s (or maybe I’m too cynical of everything LOL).
It’s hard to explain, but there was a childish feel to this book. Things happened too conveniently (like the four women were just willing to talk to Gloria about the ordeal) and the mystery was like the old ladies version of Pretty Little Liars (4 best friends + that 1 girl who’s a control freak and has to have everything).
However, I chose to give this one 3 stars as it did have my attention and made me flip the pages fast. It wasn’t a book that made a lasting impression on me, but it was a quick, entertaining cozy mystery read.
“…you know what sweetheart? We do have a helluva story. So buckle up. This story may get a little bit weird. But it’s a good one. I promise you that. And when it’s all said and done, you may learn a little something more than you even realized you came for.”

BOOK REVIEW ~ KYLAND BY MIA SHERIDAN

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.
Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.
Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.
They’re both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?
Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.
THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY TAURUS.

I never thought there’d be a day where I would write a negative review for a Mia Sheridan book. Up to this point, I have enjoyed each of the Sign of Love books as they truly are refreshing and unique contemporary romances. But what really makes this author and her stories stand out to me is that for a reader who doesn’t really enjoy overly sweet and idealistic romances, I simply cannot get enough of her words. While I do think her stories are sappy, it’s these same stories that make me and countless other readers fall in love with the idea of love. She creates unforgettable characters and weaves heartfelt emotion into her books that we remember and our hearts will never let go of. Just like love itself, her books depict romances that are wild, unpredictable, and absolutely epic.
Except for Kyland. I’m sorry to say, but every fiber of my being is silently screaming how clichéd, predictable, and frustrating this book was for me. I have no doubt most readers will enjoy this book, but because it had several things I personally didn’t like, the negative outweighed the positive and I finished the book feeling extremely dissatisfied.
For starters, I felt like if you mixed Stinger (time gap) and Becoming Calder (isolated community) together the book baby result would be Kyland. It’s set in a small, dirt-poor town in Kentucky, seemingly isolated from the rest of the world in terms of commerce and communication. In fact, if it weren’t for a Kardashian reference, I wouldn’t have remembered the book was set in modern times. It’s in these rough times that two kindred souls reach out to each other and connect – Tenleigh Falyn and Kyland Barrett. Unfortunately this is where my first issue with the book came up: I never felt an emotional bond between our two main characters. Yes, I certainly felt the lust, the attraction. I get that because they’ve experienced the same kind of poverty, there’s an understanding between them. But I didn’t feel that special spark that marked the electrifying connection between the hero and heroine that I normally feel when I read this author’s books, and a big reason for that was the timeline of the story.
In fact, my biggest complaint with this book would be the choppy timeline. The way this book is written…I already had a hunch there’d be a time gap somewhere, which I’m not really fond of. But what surprised me though was the lack of details in the story. Every chapter in this book before the time lapse would have a ‘several weeks later,’ ‘few days later,’ ‘months have passed,’ etc…and there really wasn’t a time where the story was just set in motion and let it run out rather than jump around. I also found it odd that since the blurb chose to zero in on how desperate Tenleigh and Kyland wanted to get out of the town by winning the scholarship, not much about their school or academics was present. Instead, most of the book before the time jump was exclusively dedicated to Tenleigh and Kyland admiring each other’s looks and randomly running into each other every chapter. There really was no plot or background story. It’s like the whole book revolved on Tenleigh and Kyland, and only on them. And then when it came down to who won the scholarship…I don’t even need to tell you what will happen because when you read it, it’ll be obvious. The drama that led to the disbelief, the confusion, the heartbreak, and the hatred that follows after all left me frustrated and then the time lapse came in. If you didn’t know already, I HATE time gaps, and this one couldn’t have waltzed in at the worst moment.
But I think what made these parts especially hard for me to accept was that between the time that passed and the jump to the future, it felt like no time really had passed at all. One page before I was internally screaming at these characters for being so stupid and the next page it’s ‘_____ years later.’ The way the author wrote these parts didn’t give me time to adjust to the time jump and that everything was indeed fast forwarded, especially when the characters still acted immaturely and made rash decisions like when they were teenagers.
At this point in the book, I was at the 61% mark and briefly considered stopping because nothing about the story seemed to work for me. I wasn’t feeling the emotional connection, wasn’t digging the drama that led up to the time gap, and didn’t even find the jump in time to be a boost to the story. But nevertheless, I still decided to continue anyway and rest of the book didn’t get much better for me sadly. I found Tenleigh and Kyland’s reconnection to be super rushed and formulaic. I’m normally not a reader who is good at guessing plot twists and what comes next but from the point of their reconnection all the way to the epilogue, I was able to predict things right before they actually happened. For those that have read a couple of this author’s books especially, I’m sure you will have an idea what the epilogue is like.
In the beginning of my review, I brought up comparisons to Becoming Calder and Stinger because of the similar isolated community and time gap parallel. But what made those two work for me more than Kylandis that both of those aspects were developed in detail. It worked because Calder and Eden’s story was split in two and really pinpointed the pivotal moments and allowed fresh emotions from the first to carry through to the next book. It worked because even though there were dreaded time gaps in Stinger the author gradually dropped them in the story, not smack them immediately after a big drama blowout and expect a ‘____ years later’ to tide me over.
So as you can see, all the issues I had with the book were plot devices I personally didn’t care for. If you’re a reader who doesn’t mind them, this book may very well be a winner for you. And even though this one’s my least favorite of her books, Mia Sheridan is still one of my favorite authors and I eagerly look forward to her next Sign of Love book.
Kyland is a standalone romance in the Sign of Love series and is inspired by Taurus. It’s not related to any of the other books in this series.
